Growing What Shouldn’t Grow
Some plants at Chesed Ranch were selected because they are proven performers.
Others were selected because they challenge us.
The kiwi vines fall firmly into the second category.
When most people think of kiwifruit, they picture New Zealand, California, or cooler climates far removed from the heat and humidity of North Florida. Yet scattered across the Southeast are growers quietly proving that, with the right varieties and a little determination, kiwis can be grown successfully much farther south than many people realize.
That possibility was enough to convince us to try.
Vincent became one of the first kiwi vines planted at Chesed Ranch and serves as one of the primary female vines in our kiwi experiment.

Why We Chose Vincent
When researching kiwi production, Vincent repeatedly appeared as one of the more reliable female cultivars available to home growers.
Known for productive yields, good fruit quality, and compatibility with common male pollinators, Vincent offered a strong starting point for our kiwi project.
Because kiwi vines require both male and female plants for fruit production, Vincent was selected to serve as one of the primary fruiting vines on the arbor.
More importantly, it gave us an opportunity to test whether kiwifruit could become a viable part of the Chesed Ranch orchard system.

Location in Orchard
๐ Main Garden Arbor
Unlike most fruiting plants on the property, Vincent is not planted in the orchard.
Instead, it occupies a dedicated arbor that serves as the entrance to the original raised-bed garden area.
Our hope is that one day visitors entering the garden will pass beneath a living canopy of kiwi vines heavy with fruit.

Looking Forward
The kiwi arbor represents more than fruit production.
It represents curiosity.
Few people would expect to find kiwis growing at a North Florida homestead, which is exactly why we wanted to try.
If successful, Vincent will eventually transform a simple garden entrance into one of the most unique features on the property. If not, the lessons learned will still be worth the effort.
Some of the most rewarding projects begin with a simple question:
“I wonder if this will work?”
