The Most Important Kiwi on the Arbor
When visitors eventually see kiwi fruit hanging from the garden arbor, they will naturally focus on the female vines.
The reality is none of those fruit would exist without Tomuri.
While female kiwi vines produce the fruit, male vines provide the pollen that makes fruit production possible. In many ways, Tomuri is the unsung hero of the entire kiwi project.
Without a male pollinator, there are no kiwis.
For that reason alone, Tomuri may be one of the most important plants growing at Chesed Ranch.

Why We Chose Tomuri
Tomuri is widely regarded as one of the premier pollinators for female fuzzy kiwi varieties, including Vincent.
Its bloom timing aligns well with many female cultivars, making it one of the most commonly recommended male vines for home growers.
Because the goal at Chesed Ranch is eventually to produce fruit rather than simply grow ornamental vines, selecting a proven pollinator was essential.
Tomuri was chosen to give our kiwi experiment the greatest possible chance of success.

Looking Forward
Every orchard has a few plants that quietly do the work while others receive the attention.
Tomuri is one of those plants.
Visitors will admire the fruit hanging from the female vines, but the success of the entire kiwi project depends on this vine doing its job every spring.
In many ways, Tomuri represents one of the core lessons of farming and homesteading: some of the most important contributors are not always the most visible.
If the kiwi arbor eventually becomes one of the signature features of Chesed Ranch, Tomuri will deserve much of the credit.
