Florida’s Favorite Strawberry

If there is one strawberry variety that has earned legendary status among Florida growers, it is Sweet Charlie.

Developed by the University of Florida and released in 1992, Sweet Charlie quickly became one of the most popular strawberry cultivars in the state. Its exceptional sweetness, early production, and adaptability to Florida’s climate made it a favorite among both commercial growers and home gardeners.

When planning the strawberry beds at Chesed Ranch, Sweet Charlie was never really a question.

If we were going to grow strawberries in North Florida, Sweet Charlie deserved a place in the berry patch.

Why We Chose Sweet Charlie

Some varieties are planted because they are unique.

Some are planted because they are experimental.

Sweet Charlie was planted because it has spent decades proving itself in Florida.

Its reputation for sweetness is nearly unmatched among strawberries commonly grown in the Southeast. While many commercial varieties prioritize shipping quality and shelf life, Sweet Charlie is known for delivering the kind of flavor that reminds people why they grow strawberries at home in the first place.

For Chesed Ranch, Sweet Charlie serves as the benchmark against which all future strawberry varieties will be measured.

Looking Forward

While many fruits in the orchard require years of patience before meaningful harvests begin, strawberries provide one of the quickest rewards on the homestead.

Sweet Charlie was selected because of its reputation, but also because of what it represents.

Sometimes the best varieties are not the newest or most exotic. Sometimes they are simply the cultivars that have spent decades earning the trust of growers.

If the variety performs here the way it has throughout Florida, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh strawberries straight from the garden, still warm from the morning sun.
