Southern Elegance

Some blackberry varieties are known for their size.

Others are known for their productivity.

Natchez built its reputation by combining both with one additional feature that growers appreciate every time they step into the berry patch:

It is thornless.

Developed by the University of Arkansas, Natchez quickly became one of the most popular blackberry cultivars in the South. Its combination of large berries, excellent flavor, vigorous growth, and thornless canes makes it a favorite among both home gardeners and commercial growers.

For Chesed Ranch, Natchez represents the practical side of blackberry growingβ€”a variety selected not only for what it produces, but also for how enjoyable it is to manage.

Why We Chose Natchez

When planning the blackberry trellis, we wanted a mix of proven performers and newer cultivars.

Natchez quickly rose to the top of the list.

Its reputation for producing large, attractive berries combined with thornless canes made it particularly appealing for a family orchard. While berry size and productivity matter, ease of maintenance matters too.

Natchez also helps diversify the harvest window by producing early in the blackberry season, allowing fresh berries to arrive before some of the later-ripening varieties begin producing.

Simply put, Natchez checked every box.
