Fresh Lemonade and Everyday Use

Some fruit trees are planted for a special harvest.

The Meyer Lemon is planted for everyday life.

Whether it’s fresh lemonade on a hot summer afternoon, lemon juice for cooking, homemade desserts, marinades, or preserving food, lemons are among the most frequently used fruits in our household. Having a dependable supply available just outside the back door was an easy decision when planning the rebuilt orchard.

Like our Persian Limes, one tree simply wasn’t enough.

Two Meyer Lemon trees were planted to help ensure a steady supply of fruit for the family while providing some redundancy should one tree suffer damage from future cold events.

Lessons Learned

Before the winter of 2025–2026, Chesed Ranch was home to several mature citrus trees that had become productive members of the orchard.

That historic freeze changed everything.

The loss of every mature citrus tree on the property served as a reminder that while citrus can thrive in North Florida, success often requires careful variety selection, realistic expectations, and a willingness to start over when nature has other plans.

The Meyer Lemon is part of that new beginning.

While not as cold hardy as Satsuma, it remains one of the most rewarding citrus trees a homeowner can grow due to its productivity, versatility, and outstanding flavor.

Why We Chose Meyer Lemon

The Meyer Lemon has earned a reputation as one of the best citrus trees for home growers.

Unlike traditional lemons, Meyer Lemons are believed to be a natural hybrid between a lemon and a mandarin orange. The result is a fruit that is slightly sweeter, less acidic, and exceptionally versatile in the kitchen.

For Chesed Ranch, the choice was simple.

We use lemons regularly throughout the year, and the Meyer Lemon consistently produces high-quality fruit that works equally well in beverages, cooking, baking, and food preservation.

And if we’re being honest, fresh lemonade played a significant role in the decision-making process.
