Go Big or Go Home
When discussing blackberries, one name consistently appears whenever growers start comparing fruit size: Kiowa.
Released by the University of Arkansas, Kiowa quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the largest blackberries available to home growers. While newer cultivars may offer thornless canes or other conveniences, few can match the sheer size and visual impact of a fully ripened Kiowa berry.
For Chesed Ranch, Kiowa represents the traditional blackberry experienceβvigorous growth, impressive fruit, and a proven track record throughout the South.
Sometimes bigger really is better.

Why We Chose Kiowa
Not every plant in the berry patch was selected because it was the newest or most innovative.
Kiowa was chosen because it is a proven performer.
Its reputation for exceptionally large berries immediately caught our attention, but what ultimately secured its place on the trellis was its long history of successful production throughout the Southeast.
While thornless varieties offer obvious advantages, we felt it was important to include at least one traditional blackberry cultivar with a strong reputation for fruit quality and productivity.
Kiowa brings both.

Will the newer genetics outperform the classics?
Or will a time-tested variety like Kiowa continue proving why it remains popular decades after its introduction?
Only time and a few harvest seasons will tell.
