Freedom to Produce

When planning the berry patch, we wanted more than just dependable harvestsβ€”we wanted to explore some of the newest advancements in blackberry breeding.

Prime-Ark Freedom stood out immediately.

Developed by the University of Arkansas, Prime-Ark Freedom was the world’s first commercially available thornless primocane-fruiting blackberry. In simple terms, it can produce fruit on first-year canes while eliminating the thorny canes that have made blackberry harvests a painful experience for generations.

For a family that enjoys fresh berries but also appreciates practicality, that combination was hard to ignore.

The possibility of harvesting large, sweet blackberries from thornless plants made Prime-Ark Freedom one of the most anticipated additions to the berry patch.

Why We Chose Prime-Ark Freedom

Prime-Ark Freedom represents one of the more ambitious berry experiments at Chesed Ranch.

Traditional blackberries produce fruit only on second-year canes. Prime-Ark Freedom can also produce fruit on current-season growth, creating the potential for multiple harvest windows under the right conditions.

The thornless nature of the plant was another major factor. Easier pruning, easier harvesting, and fewer scratches make berry production more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Most importantly, Prime-Ark Freedom offers the opportunity to evaluate how modern blackberry genetics perform under North Florida conditions.

One of the most innovative berry varieties planted at Chesed Ranch and among the most anticipated blackberry trials in the berry patch.

Looking Forward

Prime-Ark Freedom embodies the experimental side of Chesed Ranch.

While many of our fruit selections were chosen because they have decades of proven success in the Southeast, Freedom was selected because it represents what modern breeding has made possible.

If it performs well, it could become one of the easiest and most rewarding blackberry varieties on the property. If it struggles, the lessons learned will be just as valuable.

Either way, it has earned its place on the trellis.
