A Southern Blueberry Built for the Heat

When most people think of blueberries, they picture the northern highbush varieties commonly grown in cooler climates. Here in North Florida, however, rabbiteye blueberries are king.

Adapted to the heat, humidity, and soils of the Southeast, rabbiteye blueberries have been a reliable fruit crop for Southern growers for generations. Their vigor, productivity, and relatively low maintenance requirements make them an ideal fit for a homestead orchard.

Austin was selected as one of the foundational blueberry varieties at Chesed Ranch because of its reputation for producing large crops of sweet, high-quality berries while thriving in conditions that challenge many other fruit crops.

For a family that enjoys fresh blueberries, homemade desserts, and the occasional handful eaten directly from the bush while working outdoors, Austin was an easy choice.

Why We Chose Austin

Austin is widely regarded as one of the better-performing rabbiteye blueberries for the Southeast.

Its large berries, dependable production, and vigorous growth habit make it well suited for North Florida conditions. While rabbiteye blueberries generally benefit from cross-pollination, Austin is known for working exceptionally well with other rabbiteye cultivars in the berry patch.

Because our goal is long-term productivity rather than simply collecting varieties, Austin was chosen as one of the core plants around which the blueberry planting was built.

Looking Forward

Blueberries represent one of the most family-friendly fruits grown at Chesed Ranch. Unlike some orchard crops that require years of patience before producing meaningful harvests, blueberries reward growers relatively quickly and provide fruit that rarely makes it back to the house before being eaten.

Austin was selected not only for its productivity but also because it embodies what we look for in a homestead crop: reliable, well-adapted, productive, and enjoyable.

We expect Austin to play a major role in future harvests for many years to come.
