More Than Fruit
Some trees are planted for harvest.
Some are planted for experimentation.
And some are planted because they carry meaning.
The Arbequina Olive belongs firmly in the third category.
When the original orchard was established, we did not plant this tree with expectations of producing a significant olive harvest. North Florida is not traditionally considered olive country, and fruit production was always viewed as a possibility rather than a certainty.
Instead, the tree was planted because of the significance of the olive itself.
For thousands of years, olive trees have symbolized peace, endurance, blessing, faithfulness, and longevity. Their presence appears throughout history and Scripture, often representing God’s provision and steadfastness through changing seasons.
Those qualities resonated with the vision we had for Chesed Ranch.
A Pleasant Surprise
Although fruit production was never the primary goal, the tree surprised us.
The Arbequina has produced fruit once during its time at Chesed Ranch, proving that even in North Florida conditions, olives can occasionally reward the patient grower.
Whether future harvests become common or remain occasional, the tree has already fulfilled its original purpose.
It serves as a reminder that not everything in an orchard is planted solely for production.
Some things are planted because they mean something.

Why We Chose Arbequina
The Arbequina was selected because it is one of the most adaptable olive varieties available and has demonstrated an ability to tolerate a wide range of growing conditions.
More importantly, however, the olive tree carries a significance that extends far beyond fruit production.
As the orchard was being planned, we wanted at least one tree that served as a reminder of the values upon which Chesed Ranch is being built: stewardship, patience, faithfulness, and long-term thinking.
The olive seemed a fitting choice.
