Looking Beyond the Usual Choices

When most people research cold-hardy avocados, the same names appear repeatedly:

  • Brogdon
  • Mexicola
  • Joey
  • Fantastic

While those varieties have earned their reputations, part of the mission at Chesed Ranch is to evaluate a wider range of fruit varieties under real North Florida growing conditions.

The Winter Mexican was selected as part of that effort.

Less commonly planted than Brogdon or Mexicola, Winter Mexican has developed a reputation among avocado enthusiasts for combining cold tolerance with excellent fruit quality. That combination made it a compelling addition to the avocado grove.

Expanding the Experiment

The avocado project at Chesed Ranch is not centered around a single tree.

It is an ongoing effort to determine which avocado varieties can survive, thrive, and produce quality fruit in North Florida.

Each variety brings something different:

  • Brogdon offers a proven balance of cold hardiness and fruit quality.
  • Mexicola pushes the limits of cold tolerance.
  • Winter Mexican adds another set of genetics and characteristics to the trial.

Together, these trees will provide valuable insight into long-term avocado production on the ranch.

Why We Chose Winter Mexican

The Winter Mexican was chosen because it offered an opportunity to evaluate another highly regarded cold-hardy avocado under the same conditions as Brogdon and Mexicola.

Growing fruit in North Florida often involves balancing risk and opportunity. While proven varieties are important, there is also value in testing less common cultivars that may prove exceptionally well adapted to local conditions.

Winter Mexican represents that philosophy.

If it performs as hoped, it may become one of the most valuable avocado varieties in the grove.

A Long-Term Trial

The true value of Winter Mexican will only become apparent over time.

As the tree matures, we will be evaluating:

  • Cold tolerance
  • Growth rate
  • Disease resistance
  • Fruit quality
  • Productivity
  • Recovery following winter weather events

Because avocado production remains relatively uncommon in North Florida, every season provides new information.
