The Tree That Refused to Quit

Of all the trees currently growing at Chesed Ranch, none has earned its place quite like the Garden Annie Apricot.

This tree was part of an early fruit tree order placed several years before the orchard was fully developed. At the time, many of the systems and practices that now support the orchard had not yet been established. As a result, several trees spent far longer in containers than originally intended.

Garden Annie was one of them.

Over time, the tree lost all of its leaves and showed no signs of growth. It remained in a 15-gallon container and endured conditions that would have finished off many fruit trees. Watering became infrequent, fertilizer was nonexistent, and the tree received little attention because we believed it had already died.

Then it did something unexpected.

Signs of Life

While cleaning up around the nursery in the spring of 2026, we noticed something remarkable.

New leaves.

Against all expectations, the tree was still alive.

Not only had it survived years of neglect, but it was actively attempting to recover.

Once the discovery was made, Garden Annie immediately became a priority. Working with a recovery plan developed specifically for the tree, it was transplanted into a larger container, provided with improved soil conditions, and moved into the nursery for rehabilitation.

The response was remarkable.

Within weeks, the tree began producing vigorous new growth and quickly transformed from a presumed casualty into one of the most promising recovery stories in the orchard.

Why We Kept It

When a tree has endured what Garden Annie endured and still chooses to grow, you pay attention.

Replacing the tree would have been easy.

Watching it recover has been far more rewarding.

Garden Annie has become a reminder that trees are often tougher than we give them credit for. It also serves as a reminder that success in the orchard is not always about perfect conditions. Sometimes it is about resilience.
